Valuing the motherhood of God
In the Bible, God is described by many names. Moses knew God as the "I AM," which denoted His presence and power to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. The Psalmist saw God as a King, a rock, a fortress. The book of Isaiah tells of God as Redeemer, creator, and Shepherd. See Ex. 3: 14; Ps. 10:16; Ps. 18:2; Isa. 43: 14, 15; Isa. 40: 1 1.
Christ Jesus referred to God primarily as Father. He explained how God provided His children with all their needs, how He guided them and chastened them when necessary.
While such names as Father and King suggest masculine roles, the Bible also provides insights into what we might call God's feminine nature, showing His concern for His people and His promise to comfort them as a mother. See Matt. 23:37; Isa. 66: 12, 13. Christ Jesus showed the mothering nature of God in his caring love—his healing of the sick and his providing of food for the multitudes.
