Very early in my study of Christian Science, one night my daughter...

Very early in my study of Christian Science, one night my daughter ran a high fever. I was extremely fearful, and as I became increasingly distressed, the child became delirious. I called a Christian Science practitioner for help. She was so firm in acknowledging God's omnipresent care that I was able to get hold of myself. The child then quieted down and was able to sleep through the rest of the night.

My daughter was better the next day. However, by late afternoon the fear of going through another night like the one before began to build in my consciousness. I remember wanting very much to calmly trust God's control of the situation. As I walked upstairs I said to myself, "God, if You could just show me." A statement from Science and Health came instantly to mind. It was something about God not taking a child from its mother. I was so new in Christian Science that I didn't know where this passage was, nor even how to look it up.

As I sat down on my daughter's bed, I reached for the copy of Science and Health and it fell open in my lap. I looked down, and my eyes were on the very sentence I had wanted so much to recall (p. 206): "Does God send sickness, giving the mother her child for the brief space of a few years and then taking it away by death?" [Mrs. Eddy goes on to say: "Is God creating anew what He has already created? The Scriptures are definite on this point, declaring that His work was finished, nothing is new to God, and that it was good."]
