Many years ago my mother lived next door to a woman who was a Christian Scientist. This neighbor was also a great-grandmother and in her eighties. Mother was greatly impressed when this woman fully recovered from a broken leg by relying wholly on God through Christian Science prayer. Mother told me about her neighbor's remarkable healing, but it had no great significance for me then. Years later, however, when I was in great distress, it was the means of my turning to Christian Science for help.
I had become ill, and medical tests showed I was diabetic. Afterward I was on a prescribed diet. But because I was careless about it, two years later I was hospitalized a second time. Then I was put on insulin injections in addition to the diet. At that point, the doctors told me that I would always be diabetic, but that if I adhered to the prescribed treatment, I could expect to live a fairly normal life.
However I never completely accepted the diagnosis. So I went to other doctors, hoping they could tell or give me something that would spare me the dismal prospect of a lifetime of prescribed diets and insulin injections. When it became evident that none of the other doctors was going to reverse the original diagnosis, I remembered the story of my mother's neighbor and called on a Christian Science practitioner.
