As I was walking along a street one day, suddenly...

As I was walking along a street one day, suddenly dark swirls seemed to sweep across one of my eyes. Frantic, I held my hand over the eye and went to see an eye specialist. After an extensive examination, he told me that the problem was vitreous detachment, and that I must learn to live with it because nothing could be done medically for me. I was crushed; a feeling of complete helplessness came over me.

In my early years I had attended a Christian Science Sunday School and later went to church services. But after marriage I drifted away from Science. Close to four years ago, recently widowed, I began attending Christian Science church services again. I felt as if I had come home. How thankful I was that I could turn to Science for healing! Mary Baker Eddy writes in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures (p. 214): "How transient a sense is mortal sight, when a wound on the retina may end the power of light and lens! But the real sight or sense is not lost."

Soon I sought the help of a Christian Science practitioner, who reminded me that since man is God's perfect image, his sight must also be perfect. With her constant encouragement and prayers, I myself worked, using Concordances to the Bible and to Mrs. Eddy's writings to study words such as eyes, vision, sight, perception, and the most important one for me—patience.
