One time our daughter had symptoms of what appeared to be blood poisoning in her foot and leg. As I prayed about this, it came to my attention that this child had been boasting in the neighborhood that other children had to wear shoes to protect their feet, but that she did not have to wear shoes to play in because she was a student in the Christian Science Sunday School. After realizing this, I had a conversation with the child and explained to her that God protects everyone, not just Christian Scientists. The condition disappeared soon after. No medication was used; thought was simply corrected, and the physical evidence of healing followed.

In our family the practice of Christian Science has also healed concussion, high fever, the effects of a severe blow on the neck, attacks of pain and faintness, and measles. Some of these healings came with the help of a Christian Science practitioner, and some came through our own understanding of God.

When our first child was an infant, she showed signs of a skin problem. A doctor acquaintance of ours said that she was allergic and that we should stop giving her certain foods. This we did and the allergy cleared. When our third child was an infant, she showed the same reaction. By now, however, I had learned a little about Christian Science, so I rejected the thought of there being a need to take this food away from the child. I wanted very much to trust God in this situation, and I feel refusing to obey material laws about the situation was a help. I recall earnestly considering the Bible statement, "God is light, and in him is no darkness at all" from I John (1:5). I continued to give the child normal foods, and soon the condition was healed. There was no long period of recovery involved.
