Physical illness: mental cause, spiritual cure

Much of mankind has been educated to accept the belief that man is a mortal who becomes sick because of such things as weather, diet, age, accident, heredity, contagion, or maybe an unexplained malfunction of the body.

Many do not consider the effect of the individual's thought on health, and the mental basis of disease frequently remains unexplored. Metaphysical treatment, which heals exclusively by spiritualizing thought and bringing it into line with divine reality, is disregarded.

But Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, who suffered many years of serious illness herself, says, "The cause of all so-called disease is mental, a mortal fear, a mistaken belief or conviction of the necessity and power of ill-health; also a fear that Mind is helpless to defend the life of man and incompetent to control it." Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 377.
