During my childhood our family faithfully attended the church and Sunday School of another denomination, and I have always been grateful for this early training. When we moved to a different state, we attended other churches from time to time because my parents did not seem satisfied with their former one.

It was not until after I was married and had two children that I heard about Christian Science from a friend. She gave me a copy of the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. Although at that point I was not very interested in the book, I read it as I had promised my friend I would.

At the time we were expecting our third child. My sister's husband had lost his first wife during childbirth, and there was a great deal of fear expressed by the family. In fact, they had begged me not to have children, as they thought the same thing might happen to me. There was much superstition; and since I was so new in Christian Science, I did not know how to defend myself from this form of unintentional mental malpractice.
