Christian Science has been my way of life since I can remember...
Christian Science has been my way of life since I can remember, and I have seen it heal so-called childhood diseases, grief, and the mental torture of identifying oneself as a mortal.
"True employment is our Father's business" was a statement given to me when I was a pupil in the Christian Science Sunday School. After several years in the United States Marine Corps, where I had proofs of God's care and a great many blessings of safety, I decided for no apparent reason that Christian Science was not for me. Social drinking and false character traits seemed to identify me. Upon my discharge after four years in the service, I struggled to achieve a career in business and to attend college. But I soon found that no matter what I did, it had little meaning. And nothing I tried was taken seriously. I moved from job to job without success. Often I would have moments of deep depression and anger; then I would feel on top for a while; then I would be reduced by guilt and self-consciousness about my immature attitudes.
I was married; and after four or five years my wife, who is not a Scientist but who often attends a branch church, encouraged me to try Science and to attend church more regularly. My own family, already members of the local branch church, were in hardy agreement with my wife. I regularly attended the church for a year, and the desire for social drinking was soon healed. Then I joined the church with joy. Now I felt I could identify myself as a Scientist. This was something I'd always felt reluctant to tell my friends.
