A case of mistaken identity

When acquaintances and business associates asked with delight, "What's happened to you? You're a different person!" the young woman faltered. Her vague replies never hinted at the power of God or of the blessings of the Science of Christ.

Through the study of Christian Science she had rapidly overcome painful shyness and self-consciousness that had hindered her progress in every avenue of life. The healing was so dramatic that many questioned her on the cause of the transformation. But finding herself at the threshold of a new world of social approval, the young woman was afraid to be branded as "different" and so allowed this fear to silence her gratitude.

During several years of easy sociability and confident contacts in business that followed this healing, the woman gradually turned away from the radical spiritual truths she had glimpsed in Christian Science. She again became absorbed in material personality. The picture of the timid, bland wallflower she had once identified with no longer obsessed her, but her new persona—the sophisticated, charming, popular career woman—completely engaged her interest and attention. Her "sociability" included unkind gossip, smoking, drinking, and unprincipled relationships.
