In January 1978 I was involved in an automobile accident and taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital. When I regained consciousness, I told the attendants that I was a Christian Scientist and did not want any medical treatment. I asked one of the nurses to call a Christian Science practitioner for me and request her to come to the hospital immediately.

One of the doctors insisted on examining me. Although I didn't allow him to do so, he mentioned that my shoulder was either broken or dislocated and needed to be set right away. I thanked him for his concern but told him that I wanted to rely solely on Christian Science treatment for healing. When the practitioner arrived, I left the hospital with her.

For about two days I had an inner struggle. The pain in my shoulder was severe, and the arm was useless. I began to think that I'd made a mistake in not having the bone set. I was afraid that it wouldn't mend properly and that I would never again be able to participate in athletic activities. Then I began to realize that the basic issue was the need to establish within my consciousness a conviction that God is the only true healer. I asked myself, "Have you really understood that God is the only healer? Or did you decline medical treatment because you were afraid of it?" I realized I must understand that God is All. He's not only supreme, He is All. I sincerely prayed to discern His allness. As I did, the pain left, and the shoulder healed perfectly within a few days.
