At a time when my mother was ill, I gave her...

At a time when my mother was ill, I gave her thorough physical care for a period of several months. One day I severely strained myself while trying to lift her. As I was unable to give her further help, arrangements were made for her to go into a nursing home, where she would receive the medical treatment she desired.

In the meantime, my husband and a daughter waited on me day and night. My condition, however, did not improve. Finally, there was evidence of an intestinal rupture. At this point the family could not provide the skilled care I needed. So I decided to go to a sanatorium for Christian Scientists, which was four hundred miles away. My husband set up a bed in our van for me, and we made the trip. Accompanying us was a Christian Science nurse, who attended to my needs en route.

At the sanatorium a Christian Science practitioner helped me discern the wholeness of my true nature as God's idea. As Mary Baker Eddy states (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 242): "The divine Science of man is woven into one web of consistency without seam or rent. Mere speculation or superstition appropriates no part of the divine vesture, while inspiration restores every part of the Christly garment of righteousness."
