The right purpose of argument

Lots of us can well remember those times when such a clear perception of God came to light that a persistent pain simply disappeared, or the symptoms of a cold vanished, or fear or depression suddenly lifted.

These are impressive moments—not just because of the physical relief but because we've been touched by the Christ, we've seen God manifested. When this manifestation comes suddenly, the contrast of His presence with the presumed power of evil is sharp. It is memorable.

Instant healing, as practiced by Christ Jesus, is the aim of the true Christian healer. That goal doesn't undermine or discredit the significance of those cures that come more gradually. The lessons we learn can be invaluable. And yet it is vital to press toward a more consistently immediate effect because such cures so thoroughly illustrate the clear-cut reality of God's nowness. Truth and its perfection are not gradually true. They are present reality— even when admitted only gradually. Quick healings are devastating blows to the mortal belief that evil is substantial.
