I have known of Christian Science from early childhood
I have known of Christian Science from early childhood. An aunt was a Christian Science practitioner, and Science and Health and Mrs. Eddy's other writings held a place in my home. But I grew up thinking that Science was a great thing for other people, as I did not want to study it seriously.
Nevertheless, when I left San Francisco and traveled through the Far East to Paris to study art, I had a copy of Science and Health in my luggage. When I was afraid or troubled, I took out the book and read something comforting from it.
After I got back from Europe I had a rough time making a living as an artist. In order to increase my income, I taught a few students. Among them was a surgeon, and when a frightening and painful condition appeared on one side of my face, I went to see him at the hospital where he was chief surgeon. He examined me, then suggested I stay overnight. No medication or treatment was taken.
