In 1978 my youngest son and I were preparing for a trip to Europe. Two weeks before our departure our two dogs had a fight. Unthinkingly I tried to separate them before achieving command of the situation. One animal inadvertently grabbed my arm and severely bit it in several places before my son could free me and separate the dogs.
The evidence was not pretty, but I am grateful that by immediately acknowledging the sustaining presence of divine Love, I was able to calmly wash the deep wounds, cover the arm with a towel, and reassure my son that I was all right. I was convinced of my innate spiritual perfection and freedom from harm.
A statement comforting to students of Christian Science during times of emergency was recalled (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 424): "Accidents are unknown to God, or immortal Mind, and we must leave the mortal basis of belief and unite with the one Mind, in order to change the notion of chance to the proper sense of God's unerring direction and thus bring out harmony." Since God knew nothing of any discordant happening, in my real being as His reflection, I could not be involved in anything calling itself an accident. On the contrary, the incident was a challenge to again bear witness to the harmonious completeness of God and His creation.
