About fifteen years ago I was faced with the verdict from my doctor that there was no new medication he could prescribe in his attempt to cure my asthma; he could do nothing more for me. I had suffered with this difficulty for many years, and all the help I had received, including drugs and physiotherapy, did not bring healing. Where could I go from here?

Life had become very burdensome for my wife and me. Fear was predominate, and each day I could never be certain whether I would reach my place of business because of my condition. Holidays were disrupted and social arrangements were often canceled.

Two years before I received this verdict, a friend of my wife's who was a Christian Scientist had kindly given her a copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. Although the textbook was brought to my attention, I had ignored it completely. However, during the weekend following the doctor's distressing news, I heard an inner voice clearly say, "Matter is of no use to you." That same weekend I began reading Science and Health, and I attended the Sunday morning service at a local Church of Christ, Scientist. Very soon I started studying the invaluable Bible Lessons in the Christian Science Quarterly every day.
