When I learned about Christian Science over five years ago, I was in a desperate state of health. I had been seriously injured at work when a freight elevator fell on me, and for several years I had undergone medical treatment of many kinds. I walked with great difficulty and couldn't travel comfortably in any type of vehicle because of the pain I felt. Finally, my employers decided to retire me as an invalid, for the medical authorities told me I would not be able to work again.

However, the company doctor became very interested in my case, and after taking several X-rays, he decided I should have an operation on my spine. The outcome of this operation was uncertain—the doctors were not sure that I would walk again.

The night before the operation, my wife, who is a Christian Scientist, came to see me in the hospital, as she did every day. This time she gave me a copy of The Herald of Christian Science and a leaflet about this Science, and she told me that reading them would do me a lot of good.
