"Then and there I decided I would learn to live without arthritis!"

Many years ago I began to suffer aches and pains in my joints. Christian Science was very new to me then, and I engaged the help of a Christian Science practitioner to heal the disease. My family kept urging me to consult a doctor. They were concerned because it was evident that this crippling condition was quite serious, and it seemed as if there was little progress toward healing.

The practitioner explained to me that I couldn't rely on both medical care and Christian Science. In Science and Health Mrs. Eddy tells us (p. 443): "When the discoverer of Christian Science is consulted by her followers as to the propriety, advantage, and consistency of systematic medical study, she tries to show them that under ordinary circumstances a resort to faith in corporeal means tends to deter those, who make such a compromise, from entire confidence in omnipotent Mind as really possessing all power."

However, the persistent protests of my family induced me to go to the hospital for treatment. By this time, I was almost completely immobile. Medical specialists were called in and diagnosed the condition as rheumatoid arthritis. They told me it was incurable. My family, who are deeply religious, brought me an article from a Protestant magazine. In it, the author recounted how he had learned to live with arthritis. Then and there I decided that I was going to learn to live without arthritis!
