"As we rose to sing, the pain ceased"
While in college, I found myself facing the challenge of a flu epidemic. All around me I heard talk of this illness, its symptoms and suffering. Friends in my living unit expected to become ill at any moment. But, as a member of our Christian Science college organization and a Sunday School student, I knew that, in reality, man is as untouched by illness as God is. A practitioner and I spoke about my desire to prove man's freedom from contagion, and she lovingly agreed to support me through scientific prayer. I never became ill, and the disease quickly disappeared from the campus.
Also during my university experience, I was healed of a throat condition that had prevented me from eating solid food for a number of days. A practitioner was called for help, and my fiancé (also a Scientist, and now my husband) was a wonderful support to me.
At the time, I was feeling very sorry for myself. One day my fiancé and I decided to go out for a soda. While at the snack shop, I suddenly became aware of the utter ridiculousness of a problem trying to attach itself to me. At that moment all fear left, and I was able to relax and laugh again. Clearly, my joy had returned, and with that the healing came.
