When I first learned of Christian Science, I feared change
When I first learned of Christian Science, I feared change. I was reluctant to part with indulgence in various material pleasures. However, in her book Science and Health our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, tells us (p. 452), "When outgrowing the old, you should not fear to put on the new." As my consciousness became spiritualized, I found that the old ways were no longer of use to me.
On some occasions the struggle with a mortal self was tremendous. It comforted me to recall how Jacob had wrestled with the angel and said, "I will not let thee go, except thou bless me" (Gen. 32:26). I always held fast to spiritual truth, until I was blessed by a victory over the mortal suggestion parading as a reality. In time, I learned to confer "not with flesh and blood" (Gal. 1:16)—to refrain from turning to the material senses for my happiness and satisfaction.
As I recognized my flawless spiritual selfhood as God's child, I put off false character traits, such as extreme sensitivity, hatred, and jealousy, which had burdened me since childhood. The drinking habit was also overcome. How grateful I was for my newfound freedom!
