I first learned of Christian Science when I was suffering...
I first learned of Christian Science when I was suffering from tuberculosis. A friend who had heard of my trouble lent me a copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. I was confined to bed for three weeks, so I had lots of time to read and ponder the statements found in Science and Health. By the end of the three weeks, my condition had improved. During the ensuing months—December through April—the book was my constant source of inspiration. Through prayer and reliance on the spiritual truths I was learning, my joy, hope, and strength returned. I did not see a physician during this period, nor did I ask for help from a Christian Science practitioner.
The spring found me well and happy. However, at the urging of family and friends, I submitted to a physical examination. The medical report confirmed that I was well. But in spite of the wonderful change that had taken place, I still feared a recurrence of the disease. Now I requested help from a practitioner. With his prayer the fear of tuberculosis was entirely overcome, along with the burdensome dread of winter weather and its attendant ills. As a result of this healing, I lived for a number of years in a northern state where there were heavy snows and zero temperatures. Daily, as I went about my business, I thanked God and rejoiced in my newfound freedom.
Some years later I served as Second Reader in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist. During one week I experienced a cold so slight that I was not alert to specifically challenge the condition through prayer. When I woke on Sunday morning, my voice was not normal. Then I realized that I must work with metaphysical diligence in order to carry on my duties as Reader. I began to gain an awareness of the allness of God, and these assurances of His sovereign status came to me in rapid succession: There is one God, one Mind, one true power, one divine presence.
