My first contact with Christian Science was simply for healing. I had not imagined that study and church attendance would be something for me. For many years my husband had regularly attended meetings and services in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist. He wanted me to go with him. But we had small children, and I didn't feel it was possible for me to leave them at home. So it became customary for my husband to attend church alone.

I was suffering from a tumor in the breast. For several months the growth had been enlarging, along with my fear. Finally I went to a physician, who referred me to a surgeon; but before visiting him, I told my husband about it. He recommended that I try Christian Science. I promised him I would, thinking I could always go to the surgeon later on.

I called a Christian Science practitioner and asked if she could help me get a healing. She answered that it was important to have faith in God's healing power. I thought quite a bit about this. Then, at the practitioner's home a few days later, I told her that I did not know whether I believed in God.
