I grew up in a religiously oriented home, attending church regularly. But by my teen years I had grave doubts about God as He had been presented to me. Prayer had become meaningless. I looked into a few other religions, but they seemed even further from the truth.

Christ Jesus said (John 8:32), "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." I remember pondering these words and cynically wondering if there was such a thing as truth. Gradually I came to consider myself an agnostic and turned away from all religion for many years.

Marriage, children, and a thriving business came into my life. But I believed I had only myself to rely on. Often I felt unable to cope with difficult decisions, demanding relationships, and fear of the future. Though my material needs were abundantly met, I was lonely and dissatisfied. About this time Christian Science was introduced to me, but I could not accept it.
