Preparing for the day's work

The best way to prepare for anything is to prepare mentally and spiritually. Conclusions depend so much on beginnings. And the soundest place to start is with God. God is Principle and Life. All that really exists is God and His activity, evident in man and the universe. God knows His own infinite nature, is conscious of nothing else. He is Mind, and He expresses Himself in knowing, in terms of ideas. And what God expresses makes up the real man. These are fundamental truths of being.

Human beings make beginnings. We start new projects, we begin a fresh day. Real being, though, has no starting and finishing points. Deity is self-existent. This is true beyond all time and into the endlessness of eternity. "God is the infinite, and infinity never began, will never end, and includes nothing unlike God," Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 249; Mary Baker Eddy states.

Because Mrs. Eddy knew God so well, she knew just where to start when it came to healing, and when dealing with her affairs. She certainly knew, too, how to start the workday. She is reported to have said: "The first thing I do in the morning when I awake is to declare I shall have no other mind before divine Mind, and become fully conscious of this, and adhere to it throughout the entire day; then the evil cannot touch me."
