Divine guidance resolves union strike

Our industry recently experienced a work stoppage or, in other words, a strike. As a Christian Scientist, from the very beginning I saw clearly that human emotions and opinions must be put aside; that the only way to heal this discordant situation was through complete reliance on divine Truth and Love. "A Rule for Motives and Acts" from the Manual of The Mother Church by Mrs. Eddy colored my every thought. It begins (Art. VIII, Sect. 1), "Neither animosity nor mere personal attachment should impel the motives or acts of the members of The Mother Church." I resolved to disallow any words or actions that did not reflect a spiritual origin.
At a meeting of our company heads, I pointed out the necessity of keeping everything on a low-key basis, thereby avoiding animosity. Throughout the various discussions, my prayer embraced man in God's likeness. It also acknowledged that God had created all that truly is and that "it was very good" (Gen. 1:31). Of great moment was my increasing awareness of God's omnipresence, a fact that made it very natural to pray for divine guidance.
After making several preliminary proposals to the union, each of which was rejected, the industry arrived at the details of a final proposal to be presented. Then one of the industry representatives took a sudden stubborn stand to lower the industry offer to a level only a few cents per hour above a previously union-rejected figure. This action seemed most unwise, but it became the majority opinion, and so it prevailed.
