Health in winter

God is the preserver of man, and we can always depend on Him for our health. It is important not only to believe but to understand this fact. As the Bible counsels us, "Hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God." Ps. 42:11;

Western Europe, north of the Pyreness and the Alps, has had a cold and windy summer this year, with very little sunshine. Because of this, newspapers have been discussing the deleterious effects the bad weather might have on the health of the population during the coming winter. One big Danish newspaper blazed this headline: "This winter we shall be sick."

A headline like this and such articles are not, of course, intended to harm or even to misguide readers. But they do bring to mind a statement Mrs. Eddy made in 1883: "Looking over the newspapers of the day, one naturally reflects that it is dangerous to live, so loaded with disease seems the very air. These descriptions carry fears to many minds, to be depicted in some future time upon the body." Miscellaneous Writings, p. 7;
