My boss was a student of Christian Science, and she shared its teachings with me. I attended the Wednesday evening meetings with her, but they didn't mean anything to me. Several times I was admitted to a hospital where I mentioned Christian Science in a more or less derogatory way whenever speaking about it to the physicians. My condition didn't improve after these visits to the hospital. For six months I suffered from severe hemorrhages. The name of the disease made me fearful and depressed.
Finally it dawned upon me how ungrateful I had been, and I asked my boss to tell me again about Christian Science. This time I listened with great interest. The same day I had a talk with a Christian Science practitioner, who agreed to treat me through prayer. During that evening I was instantaneously healed while reading the words of a hymn (Christian Science Hymnal, No. 123), "Fear not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed, /For I am thy God, I will still give thee aid."
The seed had been sown, even though I felt that Christian Science was only to be used in time of trouble. I had many difficulties in the form of sickness, lack, and troubled circumstances. Now I understand what Mrs. Eddy means when she writes (Science and Health, p. 66), "Trials are proofs of God's care."
