After spending a year in hospital under treatment for artificial pneumothorax, to remedy a condition of tuberculosis, I had been given only a limited period to live.

I was led into Christian Science through a new neighbor at a time when I felt I could not go on any longer. It happened late one night. I wrapped my small daughter in a blanket and went to the neighbor through the snow. The warm and loving welcome I received was very wonderful to me. I told her, "I'm going out of my mind." Very quickly my neighbor replied, "There is only one Mind, and you can't go out of that." She was referring to God as the one Mind. I did not understand. She then spoke to me of Christian Science and asked if I knew anything about its teachings. I told her I did not.

She made me welcome to spend the night in her home, and as she talked to me of God and His love, I felt peaceful and slept all that night. The following morning she gave me a copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, and I promised to read it. As I read I was so sure it was the truth that I threw away all my medicines. Although my neighbor lovingly offered me shelter for the next night, I remained in my own house and felt so safe I didn't trouble to lock the door. This was over thirty years ago. My healing of tuberculosis, which took place at that time, has remained permanent.
