To a Sunday School pupil
We have traversed a way together,
followed the dusty road where Jesus walked
and awakened those who slumbered
in their dream of sin, disease, and death.
Sometimes, as on the road to Emmaus,
we walked unknowingly with the risen Christ.
There have been moments of keen awareness,
when we looked into an attic room
and beheld one caught up in revelation—
listening ... listening ...
and she, too, attuned to Soul—
companioned with the Christ.
You said to me, I am grateful for what you taught,
And I say to you, dear pupil,
The line is loosely drawn
between the teacher and the taught.
I come away, refreshed, uplifted, and inspired.
You gave,
And you received,
More than we can know.
The Word, spoken, begins its mighty work.
The Word, heard, lights the inner lamps
of spiritual understanding.
We are taught of God.
