"... go below the surface of mortal thinking"

Think originally

Genuine original thinking is inspired thinking. It surrenders personal sense and welcomes the thoughts that come directly from divine Mind, the one I am or Ego. It shows the action of Christ unfolding divine Truth in human consciousness and is effortless, unlabored, gentle. It has broken away, at least in some measure, from the traditional materialism of a mortal ego and is shedding that ego—reaching outward and upward to infinity.

The human mind is inclined to let thinking get into a rut where it goes round and round in the same pattern, not progressing but getting into deeper and deeper ruts. One of the accepted characteristics of old age, for instance, is rigid thinking—the inability or unwillingness to accept new ideas, to open thought to wider visions. But this type of thinking does not apply only to old age. Any unintelligent conformity to traditional patterns of thought and action should be watched and guarded against. Thought needs to be kept fluid, always waiting on the divine Mind to form its patterns—to dissolve the material and reveal the spiritual. Rigid thinking is human will. Spiritualized thought is the expression of Mind's knowing.

To develop original, spontaneous, inspired thinking as a step toward expressing the full divine consciousness of being, one needs to make vigorous efforts to rouse himself even from what may be relatively good human patterns of thought. Good human patterns are not good enough. We cannot afford to be satisfied with anything less than consecrated, deeply spiritualized thinking if we are to make steady progress in living the demands of Christian Science.
