After serving as secretary for a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, for several years it seemed time for me to relinquish the position to someone else. Although I loved serving in this capacity, I looked forward to leaving in order to spend more time in quiet study. I planned to have a happy time learning more of God through searching the Bible for spiritual truths, and through study of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy.

Instead, on quitting my job I became ill and experienced what appeared to be a nervous breakdown. Tears flowed, I couldn't sleep, and I felt fearful much of the time. During the day I was able to carry on with whatever was necessary, including my work on church committees (I doubt if many were aware of my distress), but the nights were very difficult.

Although I felt no inspiration when trying daily to study the Bible Lesson in the Christian Science Quarterly or to read from Mrs. Eddy's writings, I knew that the effort was necessary. I knew that I would not and could not let go of Christian Science—of my conviction that it is the Word of God and that it does heal.
