The first copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy that I ever saw, was a thick book with a hard, brown cover. It was one of the early editions and belonged to my grandmother, who had taken up Christian Science and been healed when Mrs. Eddy was still with us.

At the time I found this book, I was recuperating from a severe surgical operation. The doctor had told me I would never see another well day—a pretty dim outlook for a young wife in her twenties and a mother of a two-year-old son. I read this book from beginning to end but didn't understand much of it, though I sensed the help to be found in Science and Health and kept at the reading. About the same time a cousin, knowing of my illness, sent me a Sentinel. I had never seen one before, but I felt this could help me also. It wasn't long before I was attending church services; then I joined a branch church and The Mother Church.

Through the years I have had many healings, some with the prayerful treatment of a Christian Science practitioner, others as the result of my own prayer. One evening I stepped off into space on the first floor and landed in the basement. As I was falling I said, "God is my Life." Aside from a feeling of shock, there were no bad effects, and I was able to attend to my duties the next day.
