Christ Jesus said (John 8:32), "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health (p. 338): "Christian Science, rightly understood, leads to eternal harmony. It brings to light the only living and true God and man as made in His likeness."
The truth of these statements was illustrated to me several years ago. Although I had been trying for many years to live in accordance with Christian Science, there were still times when I suffered from depression. During those days I would have liked to just go off in a corner. The belief of heredity contributed to this. On the day that I speak of, I said to my husband, "Although I have suffered from this from time to time since I was a schoolgirl, the next time I will simply try to sing this false belief away."
This is what I did when the next attack occurred. I started out with the old hymn that begins, "Praise we the Lord, for His mercy endureth forever" (Christian Science Hymnal, No. 283). Then I sang all the hymns with words by Mrs. Eddy, as well as all the hymns I knew by heart from our Hymnal. The first verse of Mrs. Eddy's poem "Communion Hymn" (No. 298) reads:
Saw ye my Saviour? Heard ye the glad sound?
Felt ye the power of the Word?
'Twas the Truth that made us free,
And was found by you and me
In the life and the love of our Lord.
After approximately two hours of praising God in this way, I was completely healed of depression. There was never a recurrence, because whatever is healed through this Science disappears forever. For this I am sincerely thankful.
Five years ago I had a testimony published that told of healings of a spinal ailment, of jaundice, shingles, a broken arm and leg, as well as of a severe knee injury. Here I want to express my gratitude again for these healings, which have remained permanent. I am very grateful for having found and accepted this Science when I was seventeen years old. I am grateful for the Christian Science Sunday School, for membership in a branch and The Mother Church since 1919, and for class instruction. I have joyously served our branch church in various offices.
It is my sincere desire to apply in every situation my understanding of this wonderful religion for the benefit of all mankind, as well as for myself. Each morning I endeavor to see God as the only cause and creator, and to understand that man can only express spiritual perfection, because he is God's reflection. I am most grateful for the many healings and blessings that have come to me as I gained a better understanding of man's relationship to God.
