It was late in the nineteenth century, about ten years after the publishing of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, that my mother was introduced to Christian Science. Her first baby, a boy, was ill colic, and he cried day and night, week after week. My mother, after many sleepless nights, was exhausted. Her next door neighbor, who was aware of the trouble, asked her, "Would you like me to pray for the baby?"

Mother, willing to grasp at any hint of help, gladly accepted. The baby soon fell asleep and not only slept all night but was still asleep late into the next day. Mother ran next door and asked the neighbor to stop whatever she was doing for the baby, as she was worried over such a long sleep. This woman, a Christian Science practitioner, laughed heartily at my mother's fears and said, "Why, my dear, your baby is healed!" Three years later this same child was healed of a bad case of stammering through the prayers of the same practitioner.

I was born several years later. Soon Mother was an eager student of this new religion, and we children were placed in the Christian Science Sunday School. I am deeply grateful for the Sunday School teaching I received for many years. Numerous healings during the years were brought about through our own prayers and from treatment by practitioners.
