Christian Science has been my mainstay and strong support...

Christian Science has been my mainstay and strong support for over sixty years. I left home in my mid-teens because my step-mother wished me to, and I often wondered what people were really living for and what I should try to accomplish. At the first service I attended in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, when the First Reader read "the scientific statement of being" on page 468 of the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, the light of understanding entered my consciousness. I said to myself, Christian Science is the truth of life.

I obtained the textbook, and though I did not study it much at that time nor for several years because of the long hours required in my work, yet I had begun to be a Christian Scientist. I threw out the few medicines I had on hand, and from that time until now I have not taken one drop of any kind of medicine.

Besides my daily employment, usually department store work or nursing, I was interested in several branches of the arts. I had acquaintances who were advanced students of the arts and also a few artist friends who had become famous. I saw that fame and financial success did not seem to bring them happiness. When my opportunity came to step into one of the arts I was interested in and had studied for, I hesitated to accept the offer. Worldly success seemed to have lost its attraction. I decided to continue in the beautiful surroundings I was in at the time.
