SPIRITUALIZING THOUGHT

through following the Shepherd

"The Lord is my shepherd" Ps. 23:1; affirms God's protecting care for each of us. God keeps man ever in a perfect spiritual state of being. This is a spiritual fact. Knowing it, we can stay safe from all harm, free from every preying thought that would seek to confuse or misdirect us or separate us from good. We are never beyond the reach of His care.

God shepherds us through the Christ-idea, which is always speaking to the human consciousness. This Christ-idea is Truth, revealing man's perfect being as the reflection of God. A divine message, leading and sustaining each of us, this guidance, this leading of Spirit, comes to us as right thoughts. They appear even at the very instant that evil thoughts would try to misdirect us. The ability to be aware of God's guidance is an element of good in human consciousness, the activity of the Christ.

On the biblical pastoral scene each flock of sheep is guided by one particular shepherd. The sheep are attuned to his call. They follow where he leads, and are thus fed and protected. When any sheep goes astray, he seeks out the lost one and brings it back to safety. For the sheep to be secure, they need only yield to his guidance.
