The Uniqueness of Christian Science

All Christian religions have much in common. They are based on Jesus' teachings, and their adherents unite in praying to the one divine creator, God, in similar terms, addressing Him as "our Father which art in heaven." Matt. 6:9; They preach the gospel of brotherly love and require the practice of morality, generosity, forgiveness, and affection. Also, of recent decades, Jesus' admonition to his disciples to "heal the sick" 10:8; has drawn more attention. There are Christians to be found in a number of denominations today who are aiming to bless mankind in this most practical way—as students of Christian Science have done for more than a century.

In all these ways and many more, Christian Scientists unite with other followers of Christ Jesus. Yet there is a distinct and fundamental difference between Christian Science and all other religious systems—a doctrinal point that makes it unique. Mrs. Eddy writes: "What is the cardinal point of the difference in my metaphysical system? This: that by knowing the unreality of disease, sin, and death, you demonstrate the allness of God. This difference wholly separates my system from all others. The reality of these so-called existences I deny, because they are not to be found in God, and this system is built on Him as the sole cause." And she adds, "It would be difficult to name any previous teachers, save Jesus and his apostles, who have thus taught." Unity of Good, pp. 9-10;

This essential teaching of Christian Science—that disease, sin, and death are unreal—is the logical conclusion that one must reach if one takes the first commandment as the basis for reasoning. God, according to biblical revelation, is divine Spirit, infinite Mind, all-inclusive good, the only power and creator. He made all that was made, and everything that was ever made reflects the perfection of His sublime nature. The nature of man and the universe cannot, therefore, be less than Godlike, spiritually good and intelligent, alive and harmonious.
