Overcoming Racial Prejudice

The history of Christian Science since its founding by Mary Baker Eddy is that of many individuals progressively working toward a changeless ideal. In this progress there have been individual moments of conscious unity with the perfect, divine Mind. These have resulted in some remarkable healings, many of which have been recorded in the pages of this magazine since its founding. These healings are demonstrations of the fact that man is God's spiritual idea. Progress toward the complete demonstration of this fact by any individual in this time is like the Apostle Paul's pressing "toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus." Phil. 3:14;

The changing attitude of many Christian Scientists toward race problems is one of progress toward the ultimate goal of the truth of man as taught in Christian Science. Christ Jesus demonstrated these truths, and he said, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also." John 14:12; Christian Science reveals our capacity to follow Jesus' teaching and example. The only excuse we can give for not doing so is that we do not understand fully the Science of his teachings. But with God's help we can learn to understand. Then, as we learn more, we shall do more.

To say that Christian Scientists have always demonstrated the truth of man in regard to racial questions would be no more true than to say that Christian Scientists never make a mistake or never die. But today evidences of racial discrimination in Christian Science churches have largely disappeared. They have disappeared because of members' honest desire to do the works Jesus said we should do. And the understanding that results in such healing ability begins with the selfless love he taught us to express for all mankind.
