SPIRITUALIZING THOUGHT

through selfless love for humanity

Selfless thought contributes to spirituality. Thought centered on self is prone to be mesmerized by personality and the physical body. But when thought expands and becomes selfless, it begins at once to rise to the consciousness of spiritual being.

Selflessness shows forth Love, God, and leads to spiritualization. In Science and Health Mrs. Eddy says, "Love will finally mark the hour of harmony, and spiritualization will follow, for Love is Spirit." Science and Health, p. 96;

An important aspect of the selflessness that is followed by spiritualization is gained by giving up provincial, self-based prejudices. As our thinking expands to include all humanity in our affections, we learn not to think selfishly in terms of how every situation affects us. A proverb in the Bible begins, "Every way of a man is right in his own eyes." Prov. 21:2; But one who loves selflessly ceases to see everything from his own point of view and assume that the customs and mores developed in his own circle should necessarily be adopted as the universal standard. As he progressively rids himself of provincial thinking and learns to love and appreciate the spiritual qualities expressed by others, he is enriched and finds great joy.
