All our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea (I Cor. 10:1)
Paul recalls the events of the exodus from Egypt related in Exodus 14, how "the pillar of the cloud" (v. 19) separated the Israelites from the pursuing Egyptians, and the sea opened to let them pass through. Those who shared these momentous experiences were welded together into a community of faith. Centuries later, baptism was thought to have a similarly binding significance, hence Paul's reference to those "baptized unto Moses" in verse 2.
