A few years ago I lit the gas oven unaware that the gas had been turned on without a flame for some time. An explosion occurred, and flames shot out onto my face, hair, and arms. I quickly smothered the flames in my hair but felt as though I were still on fire. My husband rushed to the kitchen to help. He assured me I was no longer on fire, took me upstairs, put me to bed, and called a Christian Science practitioner for help.
My first reaction was one of fear, alarm, and pain, but this was quickly overcome as I felt the love being expressed by my husband and two children, who gathered around me. While my husband went down to the kitchen to put things to rights, my children read to me from the Bible and from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. We dwelt especially on "the scientific statement of being" on page 468, beginning, "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter," and the passage on page 495: "When the illusion of sickness or sin tempts you, cling steadfastly to God and His idea. Allow nothing but His likeness to abide in your thought. Let neither fear nor doubt overshadow your clear sense and calm trust, that the recognition of life harmonious—as Life eternally is—can destroy any painful sense of, or belief in, that which Life is not." Then we all prayed silently together. It was truly a holy experience.
As though a cloud had lifted, I felt the pain leave my body. From that moment on I did not have any more pain at all. Within a half hour of the accident I was able to call the practitioner and joyfully report my release from suffering. I spent a happy evening with my family, and was able to carry on with my normal duties. I was most grateful that no comments about my appearance were made, and within two weeks my skin was completely free of any mark.
