God Is There

It happened during the student riots in _____, when I was studying abroad. Because the disturbance was widespread, it was difficult to remain uninvolved unless you stayed at home. Our school chose to continue holding classes.

One evening while walking home from school, my friend and I were stopped by the riot squad. They had just broken up a riot and were arresting alleged participants, taking them off to a prison for investigation. We too were herded into the police wagon.

I'd always been one for adventure, and I must admit I was quite excited at the possibility of being in prison. But after I was interrogated and led to a cell, my excitement quickly dissolved into anxiety, then fear—greater fear than I had ever experienced before.
