I came into Christian Science sixteen years ago after my husband...
I came into Christian Science sixteen years ago after my husband had lost his sight. All medical attempts to restore his sight had failed. Then, after he had spent some time in a well-known eastern university hospital, at the suggestion of his uncle, who was a prominent surgeon, the medical faculty there advised my husband there was no hope of recovery. The very day we left the hospital we engaged the services of a Christian Science practitioner, and I spent every available moment studying the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly. A dear friend, who had previously introduced me to Science, gave me much assistance and encouragement in my daily study. There was evidence of healing soon after we made the decision to seek healing through prayer in Science. Suddenly my husband was able to read words painted approximately four feet high in red on the side of a building. This startling improvement was almost unbelievable to us, but to me it was evidence of "God with us," and I felt assured that a complete healing would result. In less than two years my husband was able to drive his car again; moreover, he changed to more interesting and productive employment.
In 1963, with the sudden passing of my husband, it became necessary for me to support my two school-aged children. I entered into a business venture in which I had no previous experience. When the fact became known that I refused to sell tobacco products, it was predicted that I would lose my business because of keen competition. I am happy to say my business prospered each year, and the experience has taught me many valuable lessons— most of all the realization that "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me" (Phil. 4:13).
The understanding of God I have gained in my study of Science, and from class instruction with a dedicated teacher, has enabled me to raise my two children with the teachings of Christ Jesus as my guide. The Bible has become a treasure chest into which I love to dig daily.
