Had Christian Science not come into my life when it did, I know I never would have been freed from the use of illegal drugs. Most of all, I am grateful to be around to tell it.

From early childhood I had been interested in the Hebrew religion, often studying psalms in the Bible. But I never really knew anything of my oneness with God. When a devout relative passed on, I felt alone, and had many unanswered questions. About the age of fourteen I disassociated myself from religion, only to be very critical of all faiths and practices. By the time I finished college I was smoking pot, drinking excessively, and overdosing on pills.

My training is in the arts, and it was considered normal among my friends to drink, smoke, get high on grass, and have wild parties. These were said to be expressions of "being yourself." I then went on to overdose on hashish and marijuana.
