"God is everywhere, and nothing apart from Him is present or...
"God is everywhere, and nothing apart from Him is present or has power" (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 473). The truth of this statement was proved to me a few years ago when I suffered a broken jaw in a one-car accident while on vacation. I was frightened and screamed, but my husband, who was driving, spoke aloud of God's presence, so I decided to be quiet and listen. I feel sure that this decision saved my life. I could barely talk, but I managed to tell my husband I wanted Christian Science treatment.
I needed to be cleaned up and properly bandaged, so I was taken to the local hospital. There the doctors told my husband my jaw would have to be wired together, I would have to be sent to a specialist in a large city, and I would very likely be permanently disfigured. My husband said that we were Christian Scientists and would rely solely on Christian Science for healing. Because of the stand my husband took for spiritual healing no medicine was offered me. While a nurse was bandaging me, I was silently declaring the truth for myself, as we are taught to do in Science. I was declaring that as God's spiritual idea, I had not been hurt, because God knows nothing of accidents. As soon as my husband found a motel room for us, he called a Christian Science practitioner to treat me. Although the doctors were reluctant to release me, my husband persisted, and he obtained my release from the hospital. Just before I left the hospital, one of the nurses took my hands in hers and said, "I wish I had the faith in God that you have." I smiled at her.
There was no pain or inflammation. As I lay in bed that first night, I remembered Mrs. Eddy's statement in the textbook referring to man (ibid., p. 475): "He is the compound idea of God, including all right ideas." It came to me that no part of this compound idea can ever be separated from any other part of this compound idea, therefore no break had ever really taken place. Although the room was dark, I felt a soft glow of spiritual light as this truth filled my thought. At the same time, I felt the bones go back into place. To me, this was absolute proof of God's ever-presence. I fell asleep.
