Safety Behind the Wheel

In 1934, the death rate per motor-vehicle mile in the United States was more than three times what it is today. Over the years there has been steady improvement in traffic safety. Drivers' education courses have professionalized instruction; engineering and lighting have improved our streets and highways; and manufacturers have added many new safety features to their automobiles. All of these developments are steps in the right direction. Why shouldn't we have complete comfort and safety as we drive about our daily business?

But human solutions are never complete solutions because they are built on false assumptions. They assume that men and women are mortals who live in a sometimes dangerous world they can only occasionally control. Complete safety comes only when a person rejects this false picture and replaces it with the truth. The law of Truth that can provide for one's safety in traffic is this: God governs everything harmoniously.

This law leads to the positive conclusion that the only place wherein we live and move is God's kingdom. Here all is under the direct and continuous control of God, Love. Seeing this clearly, we help to improve the total environment—weather conditions, streets and highways, automobiles, pedestrians and drivers. Even the laws of gravity, inertia, and centrifugal force can be seen as under the direct and continuous control of God, Love.
