The Inspiration of "the bugle-call"
Anyone who finds himself healed in Christian Science has cause for deep gratitude and rejoicing—often not so much for the physical healing as for the illumination prayer has brought him. The falsity of fear has been exposed, his thought has been released somewhat from dependence on physical sense testimony, and the light of Truth has opened his eyes to glimpse spiritual reality. Now his paramount desire may be to delve more deeply into the study of this Science and so better understand the truth that effected the healing.
In Rudimental Divine Science Mrs. Eddy writes: "Healing physical sickness is the smallest part of Christian Science. It is only the bugle-call to thought and action, in the higher range of infinite goodness." Rud., p. 2; Physical healing merely the bugle-call! So much more lies ahead. This bugle-call arouses one to challenge and dispose of sinful characteristics, such as self-will, destructive criticism, dishonesty, disobedience, pride, sensual indulgence. Human consciousness is where these sinful beliefs seem to obtain; so, in order to dispose of them properly, we must understand what true consciousness is and how we relate to it.
Christian Science reveals true consciousness to be God, the one infinite Mind, who is forever knowing, or expressing, Himself. His expression is an infinitude of spiritual ideas, man and the universe, which perpetually reflect the wisdom, perfection, purity, and immortality of the one infinite Mind. Or to say it another way: there is but one Mind, or consciousness—Spirit and its spiritual realm, where each individual is forever active as the conscious unfoldment of divine qualities and ideas.
