Putting Off Personal Sense

No one wants to go through life burdened with a lot of problems. If we knew upon awaking each morning that we would have to go about our daily routine carrying a suitcase, we would quickly arrange matters so that we could dispose of such an encumbrance.

Many of us, however, are bowed down with a far more oppressive weight—mental baggage. In the language of Christian Science this is known as personal sense. It includes hurt feelings, resentment, and fears, as well as a limited sense of ability, environment, or opportunity. It also involves traits such as pride, adulation, and self-righteousness.

It is helpful to know that putting off personal sense can be as simple and final as putting down a piece of luggage and walking away. But more often it is similar to the removal of the contents of a suitcase. As we take each item out, the suitcase becomes lighter until there is nothing left to be discarded.
