Some years ago I was bothered with an ear difficulty

Some years ago I was bothered with an ear difficulty. The ear would plug up for brief periods; then I would experience freedom again. Although I was a student of Christian Science, I did not give it special prayerful attention. At the time it seemed a minor problem.

One morning I experienced the plugging of the ear, but this time it didn't open up again. I could hear very little or nothing. There was constant discomfort. It was then I realized I must do something definite, so I asked a dedicated Christian Science practitioner for treatment, which was given. But when after many weeks there seemed to be no improvement, I realized that my need was to study our textbooks, the Bible and Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and to seek a higher understanding of God rather than freedom from physical discomfort.

Thus my thought was no longer centered on the physical difficulty but upon the necessity for seeking the spiritual understanding of being. I studied many helpful passages from Science and Health. Among them was the following (p. 7): "The 'divine ear' is not an auditory nerve. It is the all-hearing and all-knowing Mind, to whom each need of man is always known and by whom it will be supplied." Also, I gave much thought and study to the definition of "ears," given on page 585 of the same book. This definition reads in part: "Not organs of the so-called corporeal senses, but spiritual understanding." Most of all, I endeavored to express love and patience in dealing with others so as to see them as God's children, not mortals.
