The Secret Place

One who has demonstrated the law of God and felt the presence of divine Love in healing and regeneration experiences a secret joy and inner buoyancy that will come in no other way. He may feel that he is "walking on air," or he may feel a deep, abiding peace, a glow of reflection. He begins to understand what the Bible writers meant when they talked of the descent of the Holy Ghost. Artists have pictured Jesus with a radiance about him, a halo that would indicate a heavenly atmosphere, an inner glow. Others have recognized the presence of Soul when inspiration lights up the countenance of a spiritually-minded individual. When spiritual sense is sufficiently clear, one may literally feel the presence of God, the presence of good.

The writers of the Bible often mention the word "secret." They speak of God's secret place, the secret of His tabernacle, the secret of His presence. Christ Jesus used the word in his remarks about prayer. He said, "When thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly."Matt. 6:6; Why all this secrecy? What is the significance of this allusion? It has to do with the individual nature and the private nature of one's relation to God. Here is a relationship that no one else can enter. It is strictly between the individual and his God.

The secret place is a self-conscious experience. It comes about when one begins to understand the nature of God and becomes conscious of himself as God's child. One may recall that the spirit of God descended like a dove upon Jesus after his baptism, and the words came: "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased." 3:17; It is understandable that such an experience would be portrayed as radiant with light.
