One Saturday night I awoke in the middle of the night in great pain and discomfort. I attempted to pray for myself to recognize the unreality of this inharmony, but did not seem able to hold my thought to the truth of spiritual creation. Thoughts of appendicitis, hernia, and peritonitis kept presenting themselves and tempting me to fear them.

The previous day had been a very strenuous one. My son and I had been working on a new back stoop, and we had spent most of the day digging a trench less than one foot wide and about three and a half feet deep for a foundation wall. This was an unusual activity for me, but I had completed it without serious discomfort. Nevertheless the thought that I might have strained myself kept returning.

Although I had no real doubt of the unreality of these claims, after an hour or so of ineffective struggle to free myself from these aggressive suggestions I woke my wife, who had managed to sleep through the disturbance up to this time. She immediately reassured me and began to pray for me in Christian Science. She also read to me passages from the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, which seemed pertinent to the situation.
